Comparing some documents and sources as well as analyzing the esametric rules and linguistic form of the Iliad, it is now possible to make a reasonable reconstruction of a series of facts which, when placed in a specific historical context, can provide us with some answers reducing the possibilities. One of the question matter of discussion between the scholars is about the origin of the Homeric poems. Which material inspired a poet to produce a work of such great quality? Where did it come from? It has seemed implausible that the poet should have completely invented it.

The war is one of the most important events in Greek mythology and has been narrated through many works of Greek literature , most notably Homer ‘s Iliad. Other parts of the war are described in a cycle of epic poems , which have survived through fragments. Episodes from the war provided material for Greek tragedy and other works of Greek literature, and for Roman poets including Virgil and Ovid.

The war originated from a quarrel between the goddesses Hera , Athena , and Aphrodite , after Eris , the goddess of strife and discord, gave them a golden apple , sometimes known as the Apple of Discord , marked “for the fairest”. Zeus sent the goddesses to Paris, who judged that Aphrodite, as the “fairest”, should receive the apple. In exchange, Aphrodite made Helen, the most beautiful of all women and wife of Menelaus , fall in love with Paris, who took her to Troy.

Features , Issue 99 , Turkey. Posted by Current World Archaeology. January 23, Many cities have fallen to subterfuge, fire, and the sword over the millennia, so why does our fascination with Troy remain so keen? These tales of derring-do and destructive depravity coloured the Greek, Roman, medieval, and modern worlds so vividly that they have created a richer archaeological legacy than many real events.

Lesley Fitton and Victoria Donnellan led Matthew Symonds through the twists and turns of a tale that changed the world. It is hard to say where the story started. The shadowy figure credited with composing the Iliad and Odyssey is generally believed to have lived in the 8th century BC, when writing literature was still a new fad in the Greek world. We do not know whether Homer created written versions of these epics, but we can be certain that tales of the Trojan war were not created to capitalise on this new way of reaching audiences.

Instead, the stories were much older, and had been finessed by generations of bards, who would recite the poems from memory, and doubtless tinkered with them as they went along. Even then, the themes of love and war ran deeper still. Depictions of a city under siege or a naval taskforce appear on a Mycenaean silver vessel and a Bronze Age fresco from Thera, while echoes of source material from Anatolia and the Near East reverberate through the Homeric literature. If all of these strands needed a suitable setting to weave them together, they found one in the Late Bronze Age Troy of c.

This sprawling city commanded the mouth of the Dardanelles, where the Mediterranean merges with the Black Sea, and East meets West.

What really happened at Troy?

Assembling a new book of ancient stories translated by great writers, Of Gods and Men , I was surprised to discover how prevalent the tale of the Trojan War has been down the ages. Authors as diverse as John Dryden, Alexander Pope and Louis MacNeice have been moved to translate various versions of the classical myth. One reason the Trojan War has struck such a chord is that, besides being an excellent story, it has long been suspected to have actually happened.

For most ancient Greeks, indeed, the Trojan War was much more than a myth.

Almost all ancient written testimonies about the Trojan War date to the 1,year period from the start of the Archaic Age to the end of the Roman Empire.

In the epic “Odyssey,” one of the cornerstones of Western literature, the legendary Greek hero Odysseus returns to his queen Penelope after enduring 10 years of sailing the wine dark sea. Now scientists have pinned down his return to April 16, B. The ” Odyssey ” is a millennia-old epic said to be composed by the blind poet Homer. In modern times, the “Odyssey” is typically seen as fiction.

Still, Homer’s earlier epic, the ” Iliad ,” was centered on the war against Troy, and scientists first uncovered physical evidence of Troy in the 19th century. This has long raised questions as to what other historical facts the epics might refer to.

Whether this actually happened, and whether the traditional date given is true, archeological evidence has established that a Trojan War did.

Mistakenly believed to be an imaginary city for centuries, Troy continues its story with a museum. The findings from the ancient city are once again stripped from legends and become reality at the recently opened Troy Museum. One should begin telling the story of Troy with a beauty pageant. Paris, the son of Priam who is the king of Troy, a windy city of beautiful walls, votes for goddess Aphrodite in a beauty contest; the goddess promises to give him the most beautiful woman in the world.

This decision is the beginning of a long period filled with wars that will be the end of many beauties. The kings of the Greek lands become furious and immediately come to a decision: Helen will be brought back, and Troy will be brought down in ruins! The Achaean kings encircle Troy with a substantial fleet put together with their allies.

As tides turn, the bravest and cruelest of men die one after the other. They pretend to retreat and return to their lands and hide their ships behind Tenedos Bozcaada , leaving a giant wooden horse filled with soldiers in front of the Troy’s walls. The Trojans accept this wooden horse as a gift to the deities and take it into the city. This great mistake will turn the joy of salvation into mourning.

The Achaean soldiers who come out of the horse at night open the gates of the city for their fellow soldiers waiting outside.

Trojan War , legendary conflict between the early Greeks and the people of Troy in western Anatolia , dated by later Greek authors to the 12th or 13th century bce. The war stirred the imagination of the ancient Greeks more than any other event in their history and was celebrated in the Iliad and the Odyssey of Homer , as well as a number of other early works now lost, and frequently provided material for the great dramatists of the Classical Age.

It also figures in the literature of the Romans e. In the traditional accounts, Paris , son of the Trojan king, ran off with Helen , wife of Menelaus of Sparta , whose brother Agamemnon then led a Greek expedition against Troy. The ensuing war lasted 10 years, finally ending when the Greeks pretended to withdraw, leaving behind them a large wooden horse with a raiding party concealed inside. When the Trojans brought the horse into their city, the hidden Greeks opened the gates to their comrades, who then sacked Troy, massacred its men, and carried off its women.

This version was recorded centuries later; the extent to which it reflects actual historical events is not known. Trojan War. Article Media. Info Print Cite. Submit Feedback. Thank you for your feedback.

A NEW ASTRONOMICAL DATING OF THE TROJAN WAR’S END

In ancient times, the pre-Christian Greeks had no Bible equivalent. These epic poems, composed in hexameter verse, have had an awesome impact on world culture. But who exactly was Homer?

in the field of archaeology, had had to retract his claim that the Trojan War should be dated no earlier than the 10th century BC, from the mids several.

However, Rohl’s methodology is, in my opinion, somewhat lacking in dismissing the foundations for the conventional placement of the war. For example, Rohl notes that Eratosthenes “was called beta ‘second best’ by his contemporaries because he was competent in many disciplines but not outstanding in any of them,” which leads Rohl to claim that Eratosthenes was a “scholar of doubtful repute,” which is more than a little harsh: for example, in athletics, a multi-eventer who is second best in each of his or her disciplines is no mediocrity; very likely, that athlete will win a gold medal.

Similarly, if Eratosthenes was regarded in such a poor light, surely his calculations would not have proven so influential? Rohl states that “Eratosthenes’ dae of BC [ sic ] for the end of the Trojan War [was] the widely accepted Classical date,” which is certainly true in the period after Eratosthenes, as was Eratosthenes’ reliance on the Spartan king list in his calculations for the period before the accepted date for the inauguration of the Olympic Games.

However, Eratosthenes was not the only scholar to date the Trojan War by a specific number of years prior to the first Olympiad; nor was this the only dating mechanism used by the ancient chronographers. Similar to this is the date of BC as the date of the first Olympiad, a date which, as Rohl notes, “has not gone unquestioned,”[p.
